BUG CITY
CITY
A crazy coming of age insect comedy love story – with a tiny touch of climate anxiety!
Meet our main character
Emma
Fly, 18 years old
Due to her need for control, Emma has never tasted alcohol or tried dubious substances. Now that she is going full speed to catch up on lost teenage years, she finds herself in many challenging situations, and she never manages to completely let go of her values and principles as a climate activist.
So…
After 18 years, Emma finally wants to taste what life can offer, and hopefully get a boyfriend — and get laid…
Being a teenager is not easy
On the one hand you want to live the life for full, travel, party, buy a lot of shit you don’t need… and on the other hand you are expected to be responsible, to reduce your carbon footprint, to save the world.
This is a struggle every young adult can relate to, and this goes for our main character as well.
But Emma is not alone!
Located in their favorite hangout at Bobby’s Bar, Emma teams up with an odd collection of characters in her search for love. Always supported by her best friend Johanna, the nervous butterfly larvae filled with climate anxiety — and a secret crush for Emma.
JOHANNA
THE BEST FRIEND
As Emma embarks on her new journey to catch up on lost careless teenage years, Johanna sees a glimmer of hope. It’s just unfortunate that Emma doesn’t seem to realize that Johanna is in love with her.
TORLEIF «BIG DICK CRICK»
THE LOVE INTEREST
Through his encounter with Emma, he is infected by her climate activism, which sneaks into his lyrics until he realizes that he actually IS a climate activist – the new climate rapper!
NORA "MOSQUITA"
THE INFLUENCER
THE
INFLUENCER
Nora’s biggest goal is to be a super popular influencer, and she is convinced she has the charm to attract anyone.
She works hard to maintain her façade as a successful influencer. Although they are not exactly best friends, Nora is very helpful in introducing Emma to her new “real youth life” – parties, drinking, sex, and selfies.
JO
THE WRITER
Jo is a 60-year-old fly, perpetually drunk, and a regular at the bar.
Jo really tries to fit in with the young people, and based on what Bobby tells him, it means being woke. Something Jo is really bad at – every attempt at a woke comment or politically correct joke ends in misogyny.
BOBBY
THE BARKEEPER
Bobby is a bartender who has been running the family-owned Bobby’s Bar for a long time.
Bobby started selling cheap beer to attract the younger generation – and saved the bar. He is obsessively concerned with justice, and that no one should offend anyone.
KIM
THE LOVESICK
Kim is all about enjoying life to its fullest, a total hedonist.
ANDREW
THE LONER
Side characters
THE FITNESS GUYS
A bro from another bumblemo!
Bro1 is a true gym bro with a full focus on his body and working out. He’s generally not good with emotions, and there’s a lot of homophobic macho talk coming out of his mouth. Bro 2 is «the twin». He doesn’t really have too many opinions about anything, he just copies whatever Bro 1 is doing. Bro 2 is fighting his inner emotions of being gay, and has not admitted this even to himself.
Side character
THE INFECTED
We are making this series with live controlled puppets in a detailed hand built scenography.
We add 2D animated expression, which gives a fun and raw look and feel.
The Creators
Bug City is produced by Klipp og Lim, and written by a Norwegian-Danish team with great reference work directed towards this target group.
Anders Morgenthaler is a well-known Danish author, filmmaker, illustrator and climate spokesperson, and together with co-writer Pernille from their company New Creations they have teamed up with us in Klipp og Lim and our Norwegian writer Magnus to make this show a great success!
Teenagers can be a difficult targetgroup to reach. Together with Danish audience research experts Will&Agency, we are working to get the insight needed to be relevant, fun and surprising. We want to both entertain and engage them in this comedy series filled with absurd humor, fashion and overconsumption, social justice and carefree living. And lots of loooove!
