Institutt for marin teknikk (Institute for marine technology ) is the degree programme for marine studies at the NTNU (University of Science and Technology in Trondheim). They came to us and presented their need for a new film aimed at recruiting new students.
Our first step towards making the film was to analyze the old recruitment film made a few years ago. We arranged a workshop with a group of students and received a lot of feedback on what they wanted to be emphasised.
The next stage in the process involved a workgroup with representation of professors, IMT administration and KLM. The workgroup selected the main areas of interest and laid out the premise for the production.
For several years the institute has had a good flow of applications. The marine sector is growing and there are a multitude of opportunities after completed studies.
With this in mind, the main objective was not to get a general increase in the volume of applications for the course, but rather aimed on getting the right people to apply. The finished film puts emphasis on describing the unique social life at the institute, their excellent facilities and general insight in the studies.
We decided early that we wanted to make the film authentic by giving the student a voice. This involved an extensive use of talking-heads shot on the location, giving the film a spark of enthusiasm and involvement. Regarding the look and tone of the film we tried to achieve a style suiting younger audience. Constantly changing the camera compositions and rough editing, along with motion graphics, and music made by Sander.
The finished film can be seen
